Local search optimization is similar to its traditional counterpart in that it still aims to put you at the top of search engine results pages (SERPs). However, the difference between the two lies in their specificity. While the conventional type allows you to rank over companies within the country (or even around the world), local SEO enables you to compete with businesses within your community alone.

For example, let’s suppose that you own a computer repair shop located in Philadelphia and you have a website. To get noticed by your target market, you may hire a company specializing in small business SEO. This firm would then optimize your site for the key phrase “computer repairs”, which means that you would now compete with other repair service providers around the United States or even in other countries. If your provider incorporates the key phrase “computer repairs Philadelphia” in your website, then you would appear on the results pages together with other PC repair shops in your city.

Local SEO services can be divided into two types. The first is called the explicit local search, in which a person types a location modifier along with the keyword. “Meat shop New York” and “buy laptop Detroit” are two examples.

The second type is implicit local search. For this, the person doing the search does not include a location modifier, but it is understood that he is looking for something that is available locally. For instance, an individual who lives in Memphis and types “barber shop” into Google’s search box would expectedly be looking for an establishment within his city. After all, he would not want to travel far just to get his haircut, unless there is a special reason for doing so!
